my goal is to one day buy a used 03 and convert it

Why, exactly, are '01's not good for the switch to WVO? I'm plumbing and am unaware of any problems. I appreciate any info-thanx-warren

As I understand it. The Early 24 valve Cummins (98.5>2002) used the VP44 Injector Pump. This pump relied on the fuel for lubercation. What seems to happen with these trucks is the lift pump fails and the IP runs dry. The engine continues to run for a short time and the IP gets destroyed. Now we all know that VO is a good lubricant, so as long as your VO lift pump (or diesel lift pump) keeps the feed to the VP44 adequate the pump and engine do just fine. It is wise to install a pressure gauge just ahead of the IP so you can monitor the feed pressure. Kg

Hi
I have a 1999 motorhome with a Cummings 24 valve 350 HP diesel engine and dissapointed that the VP44 injector pump may have trouble running on straight vegetable oil.Need to check the injector pump to see the VP44 pump is standard thru the 98.5 thru 2002 model years.
Is the diesel lift pump different than the pre 98.5 or the later 2002 pumps ? Could the problem be resolved by replacing lift pump or adding another lift pump in series ? The pressure gauge may be a good idea.

Check the Frybrid forums and I think there are a few that have installed the 3rd gen Common Rails. I'm not too keen on them.

For the 24 valve, 2nd gen, VP-44 pumps, go also to Frybrid and check out the users conversions. I pix and post are there and I can send you a schematic as well for the 24 valve. I have 19,000 miles on it with no probles but as Ken statedyou will need a few extras such as another LP for the VO, pressure gage and low pressure warning alarm.

Here's some more threads:

These should get you started. One of the important issues is plenty of heat and good fuel pressure so therefore I would recommend the Frybrid kits.

Good luck in your quest and email me with any questions.
