Post what type of filtration system you use for your WVO.

Also, a question: Which type of drums are best for Vegetable Oil. Steel or Plastic.

I have a place in town that sells both for about $45. These are brand new. They have sealed tops with threaded ports for pump and drain and they have removable tops.

Im wanting to build a filtration unit.

that price for the drums is WAY HIGH!! Free to very cheap in most places.

Here is my filtration... I no longer use the hand pump... to slow. http://www.bonzrus.com/Family/Pictures/VegCar/FilterSYS.jpg

pair of jeans w/ legs tied shut hanging on a 6 ft step ladder, pump oil in w/ a $4 drill pump, catch oil in cubies w/ big funnel.
slow?
maybe to some, but me and a friend did 120 gal in 2 days. took 4 pairs of pants, though.
oil then goes into steel 55 gal drum w/ hot water element for dewatering. on thru 2 household filters (25, 5 mic.) in into a holding plastic barrel. thru goldenrod 10 mic before car.

That's just what I have. One 55 gallon drum for PHWVO, and an other for pure grease; separate but equal.

What do you all think of this idea... FG???
Mix of a few different ones.

Pour the oil in the top 5 gal pail and let it filter.

The red funnels on the drum have 60 micron filters inside.. At least 2 days in the drum then goes through the bags - that's a 1 mic inside a 5/1 mic bag into the funnel into the 6 gallon jug that I pour into the truck.

2-Blue sock filters wedged between the flower pots. Paint strainers inside the flower pot. Pour cubbies through this then heat and settle for one week. Pump to barrel #2 through 2-5 micron household water filters in line that will normally settle for another week. And use same 2-5 micron filters from barrel #2 to truck tank

My garage looks allot like that just allot more Choppers in the way and no filter system Yet.

I always have a new project, getting rid of the choppers, but picking up Benzessssis, posabaly an odd Volvo, or VW. I realaly ought to get back behind a desk but this is way to much fun! (and I get to stay home with my son)

I am SO relieved to find someone else with a garage as messy as mine! Can't wait to show the pics to my wife...

On the blue jean pre-filtering: I have a 10" hole in a plywood top covering a barrel, and suspend the bluejeans by the beltloops by screws in the wood. I seal the leg bottoms with hose clamps, dump in oil up as high as the bottom of the zipper. I have an aquarium heater in the bottom of the barrel, and a drain in the barrel about 8" up from the bottom. This way the bottom of the jeans are always in warm oil, but the filtered oil drains off (otherwise the oil would stop filtering through when it got too deep.)

Actually funny story last weekend. You can see where the barrels are located. I have since added a 3rd barel for more storage. I hange my blue jean sock filters on the garage door rail to allow them to drain completly before I wash them out and had to run an errand before I headed to MI last weekend. I forgot to tell Lori and she left for town not seeing them. Oh well the garage door closed bringing about 3 gallons of veggie oil along the garage door and proceeded to close and dump all the oil on the floor. When I got home, it was a mess but a bag of catlitter and Easy Off Oven cleaner cleaned it right up. BTW, they leaves are swept out now. 2 best inventions since sliced bread. Really makes the tank nice and shinny as well.

I've done that!! I suspended a filter bag from the garage door once, and then it was me -- ME -- who forgot and later shut the garage door!

Fortunately it smacked against the door and splattered, but I caught it right away and didn't have any big spill to clean up . . .

How did you pay $282.69 when it says $301.72? Did you get some sort of discount?

Chase,

I think even Felix would be envious of how neat your garage is.

In my garage, I personally cant tell which is floor space and which is just more greasy clutter that is thrown in. I gotta get a picture of it to post this evening when I get home.

Im shooting for the Oscar Madison award.

Chase - I have a bag filter vessel from another mfg and am getting some bypass around the filter bag . I would like to see how the sealing system is designed for yours - ie photos with the top off and o-rings system and sealing inferfaces on basket and on the housing . - Thanks

Mine has nothing specific. The bags have either a ring or a plastic lip. I was worried about the sewn in ring, but it seemed to work as the pressure gauge would show a few PSI even when it was new. I do like the plastic lip style better as the seal is so obviously positive.

These are the guys who actually make the filter housing and sell them to McMasters:

http://www.drycleaningfilters.com/housings.htm

They sell the bags with the plastic lip, the guy said McMasters did not want that style as they were slightly more expensive. You can also order the housing directly from them, not sure on the price, though.

Finally, you'll notice that I have a GE whole house filter in series with the housing. It is after the housing. This feeds well into my OCD as it really confirms that the housing is doing its job ;)

chase, would you mind to kinda give a step by step of how your filtering/dewatering process works? i think this is the neatest setup i've ever seen.

Chase's picture

No problem.

1: Gather buckets and cubbies from suppliers.

2: Take a clean-ish bucket, 100 micron paint strainer insert, and pour each collected container into it, then dump in the metal open-top drum. (Keeps the big stuff out of the system all together)

3: Heat metal drum up to 150+ for at least a day, then allow to cool to room temp.

4: Heat metal drum back up to 100 and filter into one of the plastic drums, never taking from the bottom third of the metal drum.

5: Allow the plastic drum to settle for as long as possible. When needed, heat up to 100 and filter into the finished drum (the one with the hand pump), never taking from the bottom third.

6: Set up finished drum's hand pump so it does not draw from the bottom third.

Now even with all this, I've still had somewhat short car filter life. So I will start doing the baking soda treatment as soon as I get my conical-bottom 60 gallon tank. It seems wax is clogging the filter and not melting off fast enough.

Chase - Here are the photos of my bag filter vessel . Lid o-ring is out for cleaning . It is dirty because I haven't used it for a couple of months . I have temporarily switched to gravity fed bags until I can figure why the ( slight) bypass was happening . Maybe add a spring loaded hold-down system in the top . ? -

So that O-Ring on the basket should be sealing against the lip in the housing, right? My basket doesn't have that and also doesn't have a vertical flange like yours does. My basket serves no sealing purpose and just sits on the housing lip. That vertical flange on the basket worries me as the bag would seal inside it, but maybe allow oil to seep between the flange and the housing?

Chase - you are correct about the 0-ring seating on that inner ring in the filter housing . There are only 2 places for bypass to occur - the basket seal , and the bag ring seal . I am thinking that some sort spring loaded bag-basket hold-down would help a lot . Would you please post similar photos of yours ? - Thanks

I'll take some pics this weekend, but here is the diagram from the manufacturer. Notice that the filter bag's seal lip servers the purpose of the metal version your basket has. The basket in the diagram just sits down flat on the housing lip:

Chase - I sue wish that I could find out where the bybass is occuring . I just purchased a couple of the those super seal type bags to maybe at least help with the bag to basket seal from mcmaster.com and will give them one last try . If it doesn't work then its on to 2 GE water filters with 5 micron cartricges or another design of bag filter vessel if find one cheap .

Chase, did you try a 3/4" filter housing before your 1" or did you just buy the 1" from other's experience or your own. I'm waiting to rcv my housing......I bought the 6870K58. Do you recommend I send it back, or just deal with slow filtering. I bought it because my pump is 3/4"....for now.....seems to me I'll wait less with 1". By the way it's good to know you. Paul Chace

Bumping this ,liked the look of that one filtering setup ,very nice.I was thinking of a stainless cabinet they use for an attachment to a brand of bbq pitt they sell at Academy ,its basically a sink with attachments for a garden hose .Put my filters AND PUMP inside and pour the veggie into the drain of the unit after turning the pump on.That stainless you can keep cleaner easier and would look good as a cabinet to hide all the hardware.
