folks,

some advice please.

i've found a PRISTINE 1986, 500 series GAS BMW, with DEAD motor, rustfree body/frame & a MANUAL trans.

i know of a local 524D that is wrecked with about 65K on the engine/auto trans for < 200.oo.

am thinking about buying both- for 800.oo & replacing the gas engine with the diesel & then having a manual trans BMW to run on grease. (BMW never sold diesel/manual trans cars in the USA, though they did overseas.)

anyone here tried this?????? what problems will i face, if you know????

thanks for looking, sw

the diesel engine might not fit the manual trans, so you may have to use the auto trans. i'm sure there could be other problems, but i couldn't really say what.

Check the 524td yahoo group.

General consensus is that you'll defly need the euro 5 speed 524td flywheel, the rest of the parts off of a 528e should work.

I'd look for a 1982 528e trans and driveshaft. They used the Getrag 265 that year only which is a incredibly strong trans...

You may want to investigate any ECU type issues. I don't know if mid 80's BMWs used computers to any great extent, but I was considering converting a Golf Cabrio to a TDI and in that case you must use the TDI's ECU and instrument panel. Of course that is late 90's+ technology so it is probably not a concern with a mid 80's BMW, but you may want to check.

Also there may be something to consider regarding fuel systems like return lines to tank, etc.

folks: did you miss that i want a MANUAL 5-speed car to run on grease????

one tank: show me where i can buy a manual trans M-B 300 or SD & you've got a deal. (i don't have enough years left to drive a slow-poke 240D, w/wo manual trans!)

donniej: the manual trans in the '86 528 is FINE & in good shape-it's the gas engine that is UNrepairable. (PURTY BEMMER, TOO! midnight metalic blue out- blue leather in)
