Fryed by Frybrid
I ordered a kit from Frybrid on July 19 and didn't receive it until September 8, only to find that the wrong tank had been included. I called and emailed Chris several times and was always told the correct tank was on its way. I've since returned the incorrect tank back to him, at his request saying he would refund me, but as of today I haven't received the correct tank or refund for shipping the wrong one back to him. At this point it looks like my only recourse is disputing the whole thing with my credit card company and that's a mess because I went through Paypal using my credit card.
Anyone else having this problem with Frybrid? If so, what actions are you taking about it?
BB Thats about as absurd as some of the shit I post!!

I don't have a kit from him (or any others yet), but I had considered ordering from him in the past. After viewing his forum though I saw some of his posts/attitudes that discouraged me from doing business with him, but because of personality, not his business practices. I did see some posts there about backorders and delays so I believe he may be having trouble keeping up with demand. I think he has a very professional product but his business at times has seemed 'sloppy', ie., wrong parts, etc. If several good faith attempts to contact him through phone/mail/email have proven unfruitful, I would post on his forum your experiences (in a diplomatic manner) and see if that gets his attention. Others have done so and gotten a response. If not I would then return everything and demand a refund. THEN I would order from his competition, ie., Greasecar, Greasel or Neoteric (my choice). Good luck.
I realize I'm complaining about Frybird on the GC forum. I'm betting if I posted it on Frybrid's forum it would somehow get deleted. Anyway, I just want to find out if other people are having this same problem and what they are doing about it. I guess it's also a buyer beware message to those that are looking for a kit. $1700 is a lot of money.
blhfla,

Personally I don't care for Mr. Goodwin's demeanor, but I would strongly suggest you do post on his forum; others have done so and (at least some) with successful outcomes. I don't think he would intentionally ignore you (although he may, I'd give the benefit of doubt); I'll bet he is just 'swamped'. If you do post on his forum your legimate complaint, and he deletes it, you may then report here and elsewhere that he has done so, so that others are the wiser. Even if he does nothing, at least then you may legitimately claim you made every diligent effort to resolve the problem. You could still return everything and request a full refund then. Besides, what other options do you have?
I agree $1700 is a lot for a kit and his business practices don't seem to have the same 'quality level' as his kit, but I would offer him this last opportunity to save face. Then nobody could rightfully accuse you of not being more than fair and reasonable.
Uhhhh....Greasel has always given me wonderful customer service. Charles has always followed up and called me back personally. He is genuinely interested if you have a problem with his kit. I'll still agree that GC may be a little better than greasel due to the HIH and metal tank(instead of the poly tanks used by greasel) but both systems have a great track record of performance. I don't know anyone who uses Neoteric so can't say anything about them.

To what do you refer???
That his business practices are not adequate, ie., his treatment of customers is found wanting? If so, one would not have to be from Consumer Reports to recognize this blatantly obvious shortcoming, as the original poster himself is so painfully demonstrating (unless you believe he is from Consumer Reports). Others have also posted similar problems on his forum.
If not, then I must conclude you mean the high 'quality level' of his kit. I don't own any of his products (nor would I ever), but I will nevertheless justly acknowledge the professional results he obtains with the CNC produced components, high performance aircraft aluminum materials, TIG welding and application specific designs (not converted components). Perhaps these attributes may not establish a 'reliability factor', but from a constitutional perspective they exemplify professional quality.
Are the extremes he undertakes necessary? I don't think so. Is the kit worth the price? Maybe, but I wouldn't pay it. I would construct my own kit from scratch before buying one from him.
Yet, regardless, the quality of the kit remains.
So which part of this (his business conduct or kit quality) do you question???
Hey I have to say that this post is BS. If you hang out on the Frybrid forum you know damn good and well that CG is busy, and has a hard keeping up with all the phone calls and e-mails he gets. I do know that one Saturday he packed up his daughter and drove down to his shop to get a tracking number for someone, don't think that he won't get to you. If you think he would delete you post you are wrong. He went thru 3 pages of posts about somone not wanting to make a pay pal order, and that because of this that he was "loosing" their business. Do you buy things at Dillards and go to Sears if you are not happy with it? I have not ordered my kit as of yet, but like you I am sure that there is a reason that you chose to pay the extra money for the Frybrid kit. For me I don't want a plastic jug for a tank, nor do I want fittings that could leak in my VO tank. My guess would be that you are not going to die if you don't get you tank in the next 5 secconds, so just chill. I once ordered a table that took 6 months to get. I was told it would be 3 weeks. In the end I loved the table, but would not buy from that store again. What I did not do was go on the internet and air my beef about it.
-------------------------
chris
chriskoym,
The internet is the PERFECT place to air your beefs with a company or product. The fact that it was frybrid and this is a GC forum is immaterial. Many greaser wannabes come here in their research of WVO. If you have problems in the WVO world(or successes) we WANT you to post those experiences here. More information allows better judgement when it comes to purchasing/building a kit/running WVO.
Everything here is the opinion of the writer. Take it for what it's worth. But if many people are writing to say they are having problems with buying (company support)or owning (many problems with) product X, I will be grateful the info was posted before I bought product X not knowing about it.

blhfla,
I think that unless you know how many kits or components are sold, and how every customer has been delt with then it's unfair to judge someone who is in a start up bussiness, on the internet, and in an explosive market. Can you even imagine the amount of interest the recent fuel prices have generated in WVO conversion vendors products? Maybe what you should try to do is stop by Frybrid or Greasecar and spend a day or two working there to see what its like before judging by what you read on forums.
I just realized something, has anyone ever seen someone from Greasecar reply to a customer in this forum?? I do think I've seen a post here on Greasecar disappear before and it was when Black Grease was claiming he is the new moderator. That one disappeared.
At what point did the $1,700 become a lot of money for the kit, was it after delivery problems? I know it must not have been when the order was placed. If you want the best of something then you are going to pay and have commited to it. I mean come on, do you want a Pioneer tape deck or Nakamichi? Mustang or Ferrari?
I've had GC asnwer my emails. I some cases it took a couple days, sometimes the same day.
GC has also deleted other postings. The Griffin Industries hoax was one of them.
All I'm sayin is I would think we all want to know everyones experiences that are very good or very bad. If you start getting too many of either that means something.

Let me explain a little more. I have tried to be patient, but the kit was late getting delivered, and I've been calling and emailing Chris for over a month, each time being told that the correct tank would be sent out that day - but still nothing. I've even returned the incorrect tank back to him at my cost (he told me he'd reimburse me). I then emailed him and asked him to me refund the cost of my shipping and the tank and to make arrangement to have UPS pick up the rest of the kit. I was sick of being told that the correct tank was going to be sent out. Anyway, that was two weeks ago. He hasn't responded to my payment requests on PayPal (he instructed me to file one for the cost of the shipping). Seems weird that he was responding to my emails before but now that I'm asking for my money back and to return his kit I'm not getting any response.
I feel like I've tried to work with the guy and was patient. I'm in customer service and I know things can get obnoxiously busy, but I think having to wait over 3 months is way too long, especially for the dollar amount involved. I did think about posting on his site but he had been responding to my emails up until I asked for a refund on the kit and also because I thought it just might get deleted.
I just posted here to see if anyone had heard of these kinds of problems with him. Maybe I am the only one. Maybe if Chris gets word of an unhappy customer posting messages on other forums he will try to resolve the situation. Anyway, I've seen other people talking about their experiences with other kit manufacturers. I used this site as a resource when I was deciding which kit to go with. It was helpful to hear about the good and bad experiences that others had with the various kit companies. (No, this is not a consumer report nor do I work for them or want to.)
Anyway, I think I will just take this up with my credit card company - hopefully all will work out and I can get all of my money back. I've heard that Greasecar's kits are getting better so maybe I'll give them a shot next spring. I will post the outcome. And if Chris has a good reason for not getting back to me and this is all a misunderstanding then I will post it here as well.
I am looking forward to this ugly post passing but I have to take a second and say I've been waiting three weeks for my GC kit. I've been double charged and had to return parts. Joe and Lee have both called me several times and apologized and sorted things out. I have recieved nothing but polite customer driven support from GC. Props to the peeps @ GC. Sorry to drag this post back to the top but I felt like I needed to acknowledge good service and possibly add a bit of positiveness this post.

Well sir, I would suggest that I HAVEN'T judged Frybrid, but that others INCLUDING greendog the original poster (remember him?) have indeed 'made the case' that Mr. Goodwin's response (lack thereof actually) was inadequate. greendog posted that he contacted Frybrid several times and EACH time was told a shipment was made, but as yet he's received nothing (cheeck the original post). Unless you are insinuating that greendog is a liar, then this experience ALONE demonstrates that Frybrid's customer support definately has issues, whether or not you consider them part of normal business growing pains is insignificant, the fact still remains. Others have posted customer service issues on Frybrid's forum and many (perhaps even most) have eventually been resolved, which is why I suggested greendog do the same. But they still had to post on the forum to get resolution; this is an issue.
"If you want the best of something then you are going to pay and have commited to it."
Well, greendog DID commit to it. It's Frybrid that hasn't honored their commitment. Frybrid has his money. greendog doesn't have the product he paid for. If you're a Frybrid fan, that's fine with me, but perhaps you should try to see this objectively.

Make the bet and hand over your money.
This post was started by greendog, not me. I am not 'deciding what the persons customer service is like' HE IS. I have seen other posters on Frybrid's own site with similar complaints (some with resolutions) - THEY are 'deciding what the customer service is like'. I was explaining to greendog that others have been in this same situation (which was one of his questions) and that others have posted to Frybrid's site (which was another of his questions - [what to do]). Sometimes that is what it takes, 'the squeky wheel gets the grease', no pun intended, especially if the one you're trying to contact is busy as I'm sure Mr. Goodwin is (as I've acknowledged before).
I have clearly stated that I don't care for Mr. Goodwin personally, but yet I don't let that affect my assessmentof his products which I have also stated are top notch. I have also suggested that greendog give Mr. Goodwin another opportunity to resolve this (even though he has ALREADY given him ample opportunity, and I applaud his patience) by indeed posting on Frybrid's forum. I am trying to offer greendog (the one whom this thread is SUPPOSED to be about) some options he may not have seriously considered; exactly what is it you are trying to do to assist him in your posts?
Geez, when did this become about me? Or is it really about you?
FYI - I took blhfla's advice and posted a message on Frybrid's forum yesterday. Again, will let you know the outcome. Thanks for your suggestion.
I think scmadm is right (internet), maybe always with some skepticism though.
Then blhfla is talking about greendog's issue as though that's the whole story??
"... as the original poster himself is so painfully demonstrating (unless you believe he is from Consumer Reports). Others have also posted similar problems on his forum."
Cgoodwin replied to greendog's Frybrid post with a different story.
"Sandy Green, aka Greendog, aka, sgreen.
You need to return the product you have in order to recieve a refund, if you do not return the product, you do not get a refund. You ordered a system with a round tank, you got a square tank, I agreed to send you a round tank. You then told me that you had a 2005 VW and I told you that you would need an additional pump as well as needing to cut power to the existing pump. I offered to order you the pump and send it with a CD copy of the factory service manual as well as making you some mounting brackets and you said "Great" you told me you would send the square tank back and I told you I would pay the shipping and send you the round one.
On friday (today is Sunday) I recieved the square tank, on that same day you sent me 5 paypal requests for a full refund and 3 for the amount of the shipping of the tank. Friday you began complaining on the Greasecar forum (http://www.greasecar.com/forum_topi...frmtopicID=4515), rather than here or sending me an email, so I did not know of the issue until today, Sunday.
I do not know how to make this any clearer for you so I will state it again:
YOU MUST RETURN THE PRODUCT YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE REFUNDED FOR
This seems fairly obvious, does it not? In addition you can send Frybrid an email requesting information on a refund, you may contact your credit card company and request that they chargeback your funds and you may file a grievance with Paypal. All will result in you being informed that you may have a complete refund once you return the product undamaged and complete.
Carefully pack the product you recieved in a box. Send it back to Frybrid. When it arrives I will refund you money completely, I wish I could make this easier to understand but must admit, I am at a loss as to how to do so.
Box + Product + return = refund

I have posted this reply on the Frybrid forum:
Christopher,
When I called you on 9/8 to tell you that I received the wrong tank you said you would priority mail out the correct tank that day and email me the tracking number. You asked me to send the incorrect tank back to you but I asked you to look into having UPS pick it up. You did not say when I get the incorrect tank, then I'll send you out the correct one. I emailed you 9/9 asking if you sent out the correct tank and if you had the tracking number. I did not receive a response. I emailed you on 9/20 saying I was going to dispute the charge with my credit card company. You said I didn't need to do that and to let you know when would be a good time for UPS to come by and pick up the kit. I replied saying that what I really wanted was for you to send me the correct tank. You emailed back saying things were very busy. You said you had a box there with my name on it but UPS had not picked it up and you asked your tech to make sure it got sent out. Again, nothing about waiting until I sent back the incorrect tank. I was also looking into how to get it back to you, but not at my cost - I'm sure you can understand that. On 9/21 you again said you would send out the correct tank and asked me to ship the incorrect tank back to you at my cost and then file a PayPal payment request and said that I had your word it would be paid asap. You also said you would email the tracking number. You asked me what kind of car I had, and I replied the type and gave you the VIN, although I don't quite know why I wasn't asked this when I placed the order for the kit on 7/19. Given the fact that two months had passed and the kit was late getting to me (the site said 3-4 weeks, it actually took 7 weeks) and that you'd been saying that you were sending out the correct tank, I didn't feel comfortable paying to send the incorrect tank back to you because I was afraid I wouldn't get reimbursed. I'm sure you can understand this if you were me. On 9/22 I hadn't received an email from you with the tracking number so I emailed you. You replied back that day saying the UPS never came to pick up the day before. You mentioned my needing the pump for the type of car I had and said that you could get it. I replied please do so. On the 9/30 you said you got the pump in and would put it and the correct tank in the mail on Monday, which would be 10/3. On 10/8 I went to a UPS store and shipped the incorrect tank back at my cost. I emailed you saying that I had done this, sent you the tracking number, and took a picture of the receipt and attached it. I had forgotten that you asked me to file a PayPal payment request. I did not hear back from you nor did I receive the correct tank or the pump. You could have at least emailed me back reminding me to file a PayPal request or said anything. After a week I went back and read through the emails again and saw that you had mentioned on 9/21 for me to file a PayPal request. At this point, I was very frustrated for having to wait much longer than expected for the kit in the first place and for being told over and over that the correct tank was being sent to me, when actually it wasn't. On 10/17 I placed 2 PayPal requests, one for the amount I paid to ship the incorrect tank back to you and one for the amount of the kit and it's shipping. I put a note on the kit one saying that I was giving up and just wanted to get my money back and asked for you to arrange with UPS to pick the kit up at my house. UPS sent me an email notification on 10/18 saying that the incorrect tank had been delivered to you that day, not on 10/21 as you say. I did not hear back from you until I posted this message on this board on 10/22.
I paid almost $1700 for your kit. It was very late getting to me. When I finally did receive it, it had the wrong tank. Each time I contacted you about over the month of September you said that you were sending me the correct tank that day. You did NOT say that you were waiting for me to return the incorrect tank before sending out the correct one. On top
"You need to return the product you have in order to recieve a refund, if you do not return the product, you do not get a refund.
I do not know how to make this any clearer for you so I will state it again:

What a patronizing, egotistical response. Ignore the real issue, then demean your (paying) customer.
This type of attitude is exactly why I will never (again) order from Frybrid. It's one thing to have poor communication skills, but it's another to have the skills, but choose to use them to feed your ego, rather than solve problems.
I hope that in no way you think that I am CG, or am in any way part of frybrid. I just think that you are doing a good job of running someone down for no good reason. Like I said bad ju ju
EDIT:
I edit this because I do not wish to bump this back to the top. Call me crazy, but if I had beef with someone I purchased a product from I would FIRST post on their web site not that of another companies. There is something to be said about a person who does not fully read a post then calls someone a bastard. While she did say she was wearing the ass suit, she did not apologize. No matter how well written this persons posts may be this does not excuse this type of behavior. You opened this can of worms because you wanted to hear what others had to say, and I say that common sense would tell you that the frybrid forum would have been the place to start.
[previous post deleted/edited by poster]
Those of you that commented about these posts (regarding CG) being inappropriate are absolutely right. This is not the place nor forum for this type of discussion. I appologize to
Chris Goodwin for making public the same comments I've already expressed to him in a PM.

I think this whole thread is in really bad taste. Goodwin isn't welcome on this forum so he won't defend himself here. Others are posting parts of his replies from another forum w/o permission. (at least not stated)
The only hole I've seen in either story is that Greendog somehow confused a post by a totally different user with the name Chris that was obviously not the same Chris from Frybrid if he read the whole post. I'll take that as a hint that he has trouble with comprehension.

It's all in the knowledge, just here to help
When I initially posted this topic I had already given Chris a fair amount of time to respond to my emails (2 weeks) asking him to refund me the shipping for sending the incorrect tank back to him and asking him to send out the correct tank. I felt I had made a very good attempt to resolve this and that my emails to him were being ignored. I posted on this forum to see if anyone else had had problems like this with Frybrid - not bad juju. There is at least one other person that said he did, which at least confirmed that it was not just me. As someone else in this thread suggested, I did post a message on the Frybrid forum to Chris asking him to respond to the PayPal requests I had filed. Not surprising he knew about this thread and a discussion between he and I ensued on that forum. He is now saying that he was waiting for me to return the incorrect tank before sending the correct tank, but this was not what he communicated to me in any of our phone conversations or emails. Rather, each time we spoke or emailed he apologized for not getting the tank out and said he would get it out that day. This is a very different message. I had my own reasons for not being comfortable with sending him back the incorrect tank right away - namely doing it on my own dime and getting reimbursed given the problems I had already encountered up to that point. One can go to the other thread and see the details if so inclined (http://www.frybrid.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2138).
To Chris' credit he does have a top notch kit and it sounds like many people are incidence free. He has since fulfilled my payment request for the shipping I paid to send him back the incorrect tank. However, I will be shipping the rest of the kit back to him for a refund as I do not feel comfortable going with it given all that has transpired. I am ready for this thread to go away as well.
yup, I'm adding my $.02 - I thought that greendog's posts were extremely well written and clear...personally I think he handled this situation quite a bit better than most would.
I'm sure that CG is extremely busy, and according to greendog (and others) Frybrid's kit's are of an excellent quality, so I don't feel like this was an unfair attempt to sabotage Frybrid, but an honest attempt by a consumer to get help with a customer service issue, as well as alert other possible consumers.
Also, to whomever said "CG is not welcome on this board" - is there any real evidence of that? The only time that I've seen anything 'censored' from these (meaning Greasecar's) forums is when there were completely misleading/hoax posts (Black Grease is the new moderator, Griffin Industries, etc). I have yet to see anyone banned just for having an opposing opinion or selling a competing product...but I could have easily missed it.
Personally, I think this is one of the BEST places for a person like greendog to post his questions and comments - there are a lot of people reading these posts who need as much info as possible before they make an investment in the world of WVO - I'm just glad that greendog kept such detailed records of the whole transaction - it really goes a long way towards establishing credibility...

Finally greasy - got my truck on May 4th (thanks Daryl!)
I joined this group tonight because of this post! I just got ripped off by Frybrid for $2525 when I ordered a kit that Mr. Goodwin told me was sitting on his shelf ready to go and unfortunately I paid cash for it by depositing it to his bank account at Bank of America. After many emails and a couple of phone calls.... all I have gotten is excuses as to why it had not been shipped yet and promises of it being shipped within a day or two. My posts on his forum have all been deleted regarding this issue, and tonight he banned me from his forum as well as deleting ALL my posts dating back years ago when I first became a member of his forum! I am left with absolutely no recourse whatsoever other then legal means and to get the word out about him! When I began asking for a refund, that was when Chris stopped replying to my emails.
I know this is an old post, but it is still relevant
Additionally there has now been a blog started by a friend of mine regarding complaints against Frybrid http://frybridscam.blogspot.com

Chris never contacted me since I requested a refund. I just signed for a large package from him that was delivered UPS. For anyone in the future, I would not advise doing business with him but if you do and have problems make sure to contact the Washington Atttorney General and have friends help you in writing letters. Expect to get banned from his forum for complaining too.
