Hi guys.

I just got my kit in yesterday, and have been on a couple of test drives. I have an 82 MB 240D. (I guess I've gone about 50 veggie miles in all.) So far, so good!!!

I'm still unclear about purging when I shut down-- How long should I purge and why?

I also have been experiencing lack in power/ power surges going uphill (and there are plenty of hills here in Eastern KY). It seems to me like classic symptoms of a clogged fuel filter, but the filter is brand new with the kit.

I've prefiltered my first tank with the omni 10 micron filter, although I did start out with a 20 micron before I realized it and quickly tossed it for the 10. Only a small portion got filtered with the 20.

I had installed a bypass under the river's seat so that I could choose at any time whether or not I wanted the coolant to circulated all the way through the tank. Even if I bypass the tank, the oil has about 4 to 5 feet of heated line to go through b4 the heated filter. Surely that's enough to get it p to temp. Right?

Would the lack of power be because the IP has a hard time drawing the oil from the tank without it being heated good? I'll try it the other way and see if it makes the difference.

I can see a little smoke at idle even when engine is thoroughly warm. Is this normal?

My temp guage never reads more than about 90 to 100 degrees C. Is this normal?
I have no way of really knowing that the thermostat on the car is actually the right one.

Thanks guys for the input since I started in this forum.
I've come here for info since the day I heard of running cars on WVO. Now I'm driving one.

PS I guess I had a good idea when it came to plugging the banjo bolt; I just used a drywall anchor and a stainless wood screw. This way it's as permanent or as temporary as I want it to be. It's also cheaper and faster than JB Weld.

I'm still unclear about purging when I shut down-- How long should I purge and why? --I purge for about 30 seconds.

Lack of power could be from the veggie filter. Also air trapped in the loop. Do a 1.5 minute backflush to purge any air bubbles and try going uphill again. Still lacking? Take off your filter and blow thru it. If it's hard to blow thru, you need to replace it.

"I've prefiltered my first tank with the omni 10 micron filter, although I did start out with a 20 micron before I realized it and quickly tossed it for the 10. Only a small portion got filtered with the 20. "

You should prefilter down to 1 micron. A 10 micron filter only gets out 95% of 10 micron particles. So 5% of the crud in your SVO may be clogging your filter.

I would allow the coolant to circulate to the tank.

"Would the lack of power be because the IP has a hard time drawing the oil from the tank without it being heated good? "

Maybe. If you go longer before switching to veggie and the power problem stops, then it could be from too cold and viscous SVO.

"I can see a little smoke at idle even when engine is thoroughly warm. Is this normal?" Smoke at idle is normal, but check for air bubbles.

"My temp guage never reads more than about 90 to 100 degrees C. Is this normal?" YES! That's about 180 degrees F.
Way to go on the conversion!

Is your fuel return looped? If so, it's probabally air trapped in the line. Purging won't always get rid of all the air. You may have to bleed manually from the return on top of the diesel filter. The clear fuel line that greasel sells with their kit is really good for that, since you can see where the air pockets are at.

If you switch back to diesel when losing power up hill, do you regain power? If so, it's either your veggie filter or a kink in yer wvo line somewhere? If you had much sediment in your tank, maybe your filter just got clogged really fast.

I prefilter to 5 microns.

I think you'll still get a very small amount of diesel coming through yer banjo bolt with that setup, but maybe I'm wrong.
