In one of the other posts it was mentioned that there were a lot of California greasecars.

Would those in California please stand up?

I am very interested in this but I am reluctant as I am sure most everyone is before they modify their expensive vehicle.

Thanks.
K

Standing up in San Diego. I just hooked up my home made conversion kit. Cost about 200 bucks. The hardest part was just making sure all the fuel lines are sealed so there are no air leaks. Do it! With the help of these guys (and gals?) here and on other forums you'll get through it no problem.

Jay, Where are you obtaining your grease? I ask because I heard that here in california restaurants are not supposed to do this. Looking to find out what hurtles you had to go through to get this done. Would also like to get together to see your system.

I get all my current oil from three resuraunts within blocks of my house. I had one place ask me for a form that they could show 'the inspectors' when they came to prove that the resturaunt was not dumping their oil down the drain. Aside from that I have had no problem getting oil. I burn about 30 gallons a week... Ford 4x4's with towing gears get lousy milage!

So School - what milage do you get in the van? I get about 13 to 14 mpg.

svswan,
I'm not sure but on diesel, it was 15 to 18mpg. I'm guestimating 15 mpg on veg. I have 230k miles, E350 7.3turbo diesel. I'm having issues with dirty fuel, clogged filter, weak pump etc .... changing them all.

Growl. I use to filter to 1 micron with bag filters but now I use 5 micron elements in a 'whole house water filter' as my final filter before fueling. I'm getting a few thousand miles per stock filter, I don't use a secondary filter. I've heard of rare instances where people experience some kind of waxy build up in the tank and lines but I beleive that is cause when then mix in other fules with WVO to bypass heating. Are you filtering good before pouring it in?

Hey - I'll be in Grass Vally/Nevada City for a 5Rhythms workshop June 10 - 12. I'd love to check out your van and see how you riged it. I've thought about a van instead of the truck. You can ping me at airwave_ca@yahoo.com or here if you like.

Hi! If you get your grease from restaurants, how do you filter the grease? Thanks, I'm a newbie. I'm intrigued with the idea but want to get more information on the cost and hassle of getting the oil.

NOR CAL SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA!!!!

You know Ive heard about these STUPID and IDIOTIC laws about collecting oil. supposidly you need some $175 permit to collect ANY type of cooking oil from a restaurant. If you dont have the permit and collect the oil fist offense $500 fine 2nd offense $1,000 fine and third time use that grease to lubricate yourself and get your manhood taken by a serial killer in a jail cell!!!!

ARE YOU GUYS AWARE OF THIS? i can give a shit i still collect the oil come get me coppers!!!!!

Hi Jay,
Are you still running on veggie?  I just converted my truck with a GFS.  This post is damn old... Anyway, seems as though you would have much experience by now.  I'm in Monterey CA.  Shoot me an email if you want.  I'm looking for people in the area to network with.

Wow, this post started way long ago but looks like it is still alive. :)  I'm in Murrieta, CA running a 97 VW Passat TDI with the greasecar SV98 6 port valve and a homemade (16 gallon metal drum) heated tank in the trunk.  Also in the process of converting a 1987 Mercedes 300SDL which I purchased a month ago.  If I could make up my mind between running a single or dual tank in the Mercedes all would be well.  Guess I need to either $hit or get off the pot on that decision right?  Anyway, I might be able to drive up to the Feb 11 meeting in San Diego if my wife says it is okay to go out and play.  :)  Always looking for good oil sources if anyone has one...hell I'll buy the oil from you if it is decent and you want to make .25 or so just by reselling it.  I just need enough for myself and it is a long drive into LA to pick it up now.

Bigjerel:
There are several MB single tankers in the Greater San Diego Greasers who can give you the pros and cons of BOTH systems.  One member has 4 VO conversions (one and two tankers).  Come join us.  If you like, I'll post on the GSDG website your post.  The Feb meeting will be in SD or the March 10th meeting will be in Carlsbad.  Contact me at < rene22@cox.net > for more info.
