Are any of you one tank Mercedes veggers running without an additional heated fuel filter? I've got an '87 300sdl and about 25 gallons of wvo settling prior to filtering. I live in the Charlotte, NC area. This time of year it doesn't get near 40 degrees.

Fatty drives a 300CD, about an '83 I think, on single tank, and he doesn't have a heated filter. He has an aux fuel pump, some injector line heater on an aluminum fuel line just before the lift pump, and injector line heaters on the injectors.

It's his daily driver, and I don't think he has any more heat than that.

Perhaps he will comment on here about it, but if your '87 has the same motor, it will work the same way.

In the winter in NC, it might not. But in the summer it should.

I have an '87 300D, which has the same OM603 6 cylinder as your car has. This engine is different from the '85 and earlier 300 diesel engines, which alot of people regard as the most veggie-friendly. The OM 603 works fine too. I run mine on veggie completely stock, no modifications, no heat at all (in FL) like One Tank does. Mine will cold start OK on 100% veggie, always first try, but I get a light miss for the first 10 or 15 seconds, then it smooths out and runs great. Adding about 10% diesel (I haven't tried mixing RUG or mineral spirits yet) cures that behaviour. In my experience, the car behaves exactly the same when cold starting on 100% veggie when it's 45 degrees out as it does cold starting on a 95 degree day after sitting in the positively brutal sun on the molten blacktop parking lot at work all day long. That is to say, I think that in these old Mercedes, as long as the veg oil is liquid, the engine temp does the trick.
