If you veteran greasers had a choice of a peticular make and model vw jetta to buy, which would it be and why?

I prefer jetta models of 2002-2003 golf, jetta, passat and new beetle since volkswagen is known for its reliability with diesel engines. I'd consider my 2006 jetta (with 90miles) for conversion. There'll be no issues with the mileage

Anyting up to '06 works fine. 2003 and earlier are a bit easier because they don't have a lift pump. But I would just find the best car; that is more important than the year.
