WVO quality?

Based on what I've read on this board, it seems that oil from Asian food restaurants tend to be the best, while burger joints generally have the lowest quality oil. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I will be installing a GC kit on my '95 12v Ram this weekend, and I just secured a local Mexican restaurant as a source of about 5 gallons per week. How does "Mexican" oil compare to the rest? Just trying to determine what other restaurants I should pursue as a souirce of WVO.

Thanks for any input.

My perspective is that the "quality" of WVO is based on about 3 things:

1. What kind of oil the source starts with. Partially hydrogenated oil is OK, but pure Canola is better -- mainly because it stays liquid at lower temperatures and is therefore easier to filter. From what I've read, Canola contains more energy than Soy or Peanut. I have three sources, and I like the pure canola.

2. How much the restaurant uses the oil. The more often they change the better. The less it's used, the less gunk is in it.

3. How they dispose of it. My sources put it back into the "cubies" -- the jugs they buy the oil in or they fill gas cans that I've provided. It is ideal to find a source that's willing to do this for you. Otherwise, they'll probably be dumping their oil into a barrel or grease bin out back, and it will likely be messier, with water etc. Also, a little burger joint that I collect from keeps their deep-fryer grease separate from their scrapings from the grill. This is nice, because I don't have burger bits and animal fats mixed in with the oil.

Pretty much anything is usable. The better quality oils are just easier to filter/condition for your vehicle.

Raj,
I agree with brian, although the "best' oil I can secure is Soy, but it is not hydrogenated, I stay away from the "extended fry oil" they are usually hydrogenated and mixed (corn/canola/soy blend). Especially if you live where it gets cold, I also have the restaruant put it back in the cubies, no fuss, no muss. Although I now have the setup to start sucking from the dumpsters once the temps stay above 40F.

Justgreasenofries, did you build a sucker? Why only above 40F? I have sucked grease in dumpsters with nights of 20F. It was pudding consistency but suck ok, just a little slower than if if was liquid. What size hose are you using?

I have a 17 inch diaphram pump, used, got it from the neighbor for $200, it was used for pumping out manure pits and sludge from dairy cow farms, Why 40F ? Because i have plenty of oil and when I do pump it I want it to be easier, I will have a 1 inch suction hose ( hydraulic) with a screen filter on the end, One inch discharge hose, although the pump has 4inch!! Inlet and outlet, nothing like the abilty to suck up soft balls!! Hah!

Persue all available grease, do recon missions and spy on the inside of every dumpster that is available , look for the cleanest most fluid in cold weather that you can find. Don't judge the grease by the type of food they serve, these are generallizations that may not be true at the places near you. The best grease I get is from a chinese joint, BUT there is even better grease in this cheesy little sports bar nearby but they won't let me have any, they must fear change and like paying there rendering co.. I also found that some small places just fill the cubies up and throw them in the trash dumpster. Don't overlook these just because you don't see a grease bin.

Sorry, I thought you built a sucker. I've been spoiled by the sucker. One hose to deal with for pickup and discharge. I'm designing additions to it so that prelim filtering is done during pickup and discharge. Maybe one day it will become an onboard collection/ filtration system.

Good call Nate! Some of my best oil comes from the "Happy Hour' bar and grill, its only 1 cubie a week but "lightly" used. They don't have the grease dumpster the guy was using his dumpster but the dumpster guys got on him for it, then I found him and all is well.
