I am looking for help on cleaning out a fuel system on a 78 mercedes 300D. Heres the problem, the car was ran on unstrained WVO and bio...it was poured directly into the tank...not sure how long it ran on this...but the conseqence is that is clogged everything from the fuel tanl to the injectors. It was then sold, sat since 2004 and the injection pump removed. So far the fuel strainer is shot, the left pump is shot, the fuel sending unit...all hose and who knows what else. I am looking fof information on what I can use to clean out the tank, It had/had about 20lbs of sludge in it. I tried the carwash routing, it got some out but there is still alot stuck inside. I don't have a raditor shop close enough to boil it and I am trying to find something that is to stronge that it will eat away the factory lining of the tank. I still have to work on cleaning out the steel fuel lines. If anyone has/had any experienc in this and can recommend a cleaner of some sort please let me know.....

hmm never thought of drano. I figured out how to get hot water to the back yard, via the wash machine hookup. So tomorrow I shall try hot water. I went to the junk yards, looking for a clean tank, eaist way...but unfortunity pick n pull punchers all their gas tanks...a waste for sure.

Most drain cleaners, if not all, no longer have lye in them.  I used to make bio-diesel and when I started with small batches I could go buy straight-up lye at Lowe's but they quit stocking it shortly thereafter.  Thanks meth-heads.

You can buy small batches of lye from various resellers on ebay.

I would purchase the tank from the junk yard.  I had a leaky diesel fuel tank fixed at a local welder.  As a safety percaution, carbon dioxide was pumped into the tank, as the holes were welded closed. Quick and easier than cleaning the junk out of your messed up MB tank.
