Glow relay turns on wipers. Help?

ok here's one for the mercedes folk out there. My glow plugs are giving me trouble. They sometimes work other times not. When they dont during the glow cycle the wipers come on instead. I've replaced the relay box, all the plugs, checked and repaired grounds and generally fooled around with everything I thought was related with no luck. My only guess is that the wiper wires and those controlling the glow relay cross and are touching somewhere but I'm not sure where, how or if that's the answer. Anyone with suggestions please let me know.

Thanks,
G

Three things to always mention when seeking automotive repair advice, without them most in the know will not even bother to respond.

MAKE
MODEL
YEAR

Let me know and I will try to help.

Giles,

I just got up (6:00AM....When do children begin to sleep in???) and will pull up the wiring diagram when I get to my shop and let you know what I see. Great problem because it is so strange that if I can't figure it out, every benz tech i know will want to have a go at it!

I had a 1971 bug problem, the client called and said "when I honk the horn, the headlights flash (which I thought was a good feature), when i turn on the turn signal, my radio freaks and when I press the brake pedal all my guages flip out" I assured her it was not possible but asked her to tow the car to me. When it arrived I found it was true! I also found a 4" drywall screw laying across the fuse panel which on an 71 bug is completely exposed. It was shorting all sorts of seperate things together.

BTW - where did you draw your power fot the switch and solenoid valves?

Thanks Chris,

At the moment I'm pulling power from the light circuit. I'm going to change that as I also have an indicator light hooked up to the valve and need to see where I'm at without the lights being on. Where do you recommend? The car is very much on it's last legs, body is totally shot underneath but the engine seems to be pretty strong.

Hey, I have a similar issue with my 84 300SD. I haven't had time to try to figure it out. When I switch to VO my wipers sometimes come on once. Actually they do it frequently, like every other time. At this time I am thinking that I messed something up (actually it was the lovely wife who did the switches :-) but it seems to be more than that.

The other day it happened when I was switching one the headlights. This only happened once so far. How can things only happen once and then go away again?? Also, sometimes the wipers will wipe twice when you just flick them on for a short time, which is not supposed to happen.

My only thought so far is that this could be a bad multi-switch (the lever on the steering column) or that some of this stuff might be voltage regulated and gets triggered.

By the way, I am running my switches off the wire for the cigarette lighter. I figured that should be built for enough power but that's just an amateur mechanics guess.

thats where i take my power also, if you can plug lights and other do-dads into it i would think it could handle a solenoid valve?!?!

I am using cig lighter source. Works fine. 300tdt needing rear end lifted sounds like bad vacuum accumulators (under rear deck area from below. Common problem on old M-B with self-adjusting leveling. Not cheap thogh, and junkyard units are typically as bad as your old ones. Good Luck.
