Basic circuitry : 12 volt to  fuel gauge "Pos". Fuel gauge "Neg"  to sender unit "Pos". Sender unit "Neg"  to ground.
Sender unit (float type) is a rheostat/variable resistor (approx 0/LOW Ohms at FULL and around 250/HIGH Ohms at EMPTY)
To troubleshoot :  Check for loose/bad connections, power to fuel gauge, ground and wirings.
Remove wiring connections to sender, check sender resistance with a multimeter while moving the float.
Get a rheostat(1KOhm or more? as far as it give you 0 to 250 Ohms adjustment) from Radio Shack. Substitute the sender unit with the rheostat, using the
middle prong and one of the other prong on the rheostat, crank the rheostat and check the operation of the fuel gauge.
See if it fits!!!!!
Comments are welcome.
