I am installing a GC kit on a 97 VW Jetta. All the installation diagrams show a system with out a lift pump- the IP draws grease all the way from the tank, through the filter and the valve.
Should I put an electrical lift pump if the power seems low, or to extend the life of the IP? Do folks have thoughts one way or another?

Go to some place like Autozone or Advance and get an Airtex / Master E81016S low pressure (2.52.5 psi) 12V universal fuel pump .

The pre-unit injector TDI's (AHU, ALH) doesn't need a lift pump, which is why VW never stuck one in the existing diesel setup. Some people will add them as a sort of "hot-rod" trick, to keep positive pressure on the feed pump (which is part of the injection pump).

If you put a low pressure pump before the filter it makes priming the filter when changing a snap and it also pressurizes the line to the IP so any small leaks can't suck in air. It is a lot easier to deal with a tiny leak when it is fuel and not air!!. A vacuum/pressure gauge tapped in betwen the filter and the IP also tells you the condition of your filter right away.

Is that supposed to be E8016S? If so, then Autozone around here doesn't have that one (low pressure), but they do have the E8012S which is the 5-9psi pump. That would probably be too much pressure for what we would need on the TDIs right?
I already have an E8012S to cycle my oil through my FPHE before I switch over to veggie and so far its worked flawlessly!
Also, do you need any kind of fuel pressure regulator when using one of these Airtex low pressure pumps?
Rick
The Airtex / Master pumps have a built-in pressure regulator . It would be preferable to use the low pressure model (E8012S) if you find it Keep look . However, I do know of people using the E8012S but I wonder if the higher pressure might have some negative effect on the life of the IP .

I just ordered the low pressure Airtex pump on Amazon for $43.87 and free shipping. Should be here wednesday so I'll post here how well it performs!

Just installed my new Airtext low pressure pump today. I installed it between the GC filter and the return T fitting. I already have a couple relays setup for my other FPHE pre-heat recirculation (on only when supply valve is on diesel), and my injector line heaters (on only when supply valve is on veggie) and both can only be on when the ignition is turned on. I noticed a little boost in power with the pump however this was at dusk so the real test will be tomorrow when it is daylight and hot outside!
Just as a confirmation, the low pressure pump's part number is E8016S. The higher pressure equivalent is E8012S. The pumps are the same size and everything. I noticed that the low pressure pump is made in USA and the higher pressure pump is made in mexico... in case anyone cares

RickJr do you have an update on your low pressure pump that you purchased and installed on your car? I would love to get some pictures of your set and a write up of what you have found out about installing it. Did it help out over all? Even when it?s hot outside? And do you know what PSI you are seeing at the IP.

Will the hot grease flowing thru the pump make it's lifespan pretty short? I have a super small air leak that I've been at for about 6 months and think I'm ready to break down and put a pump on the veggi side to pressurize it to hopefully take care of the air leak.

When gasoline on your hands starts to smell bad and diesel smells good then you have found the light!
My 91 Jetta had a problem on the diesel side. (turned out being a plugged water trap unit. )In troubleshooting I threw on a Facet pump that was literaly within arms reach. I had a problem a few days later blowing off the small return line hoses. I went to a motorcycle shop I had ties with + rummaged around and grabbed a handfull of little wire clips that we used on carb hoses. They were a good fit and solved the probelm. I also put a small CR regulator on.(both it an the pump were take offs from my race car.) It gets kept about 2lbs. They are mounted after the solinoids-meaning it gets both fuels. 40k miles on with no problems.

I'd recommend getting one. I didn't have one at first but I added one about a year to my 90 Jetta. It improved both my performance and the usable lifespan of my fuel filters.
When you think about it you're adding a lot of extra work for your fuel pump on veggie: in addition to it being more viscous, your fuel filter is going to add more resistance a lot of the time if you're using WVO.
