I need to find out what to mix with svo and what ratio to use for a one tank system. The car is a 1987 300sdl. Is a mix of 50%diesel with 50% svo ok in the Atlanta area. Or is there another alternative that would be better.
Let me know what you decide to go with. I have a 1987 300SDL that I'm still deciding whether to use a 2 tank or single tank install. I already have a 97 VW Passat TDI which I built a 2 tank system for and it is perfect out here in sourthern CA. Just not sure I want to put a second tank in the trunk of the SDL. This thing is in pristine condition, but since it is so old I am scared of dumping oil in the stock tank and jamming up the filters.
Jere
Suggestion: Run with a two tank system for the SDL but don't use an IN-TANK HEATER. Install the HIH lines just before the VO tank fuel line. Poly will most likely not form with unheated oil in contact with the steel MB fuel tank. Heated VO in contact with steel tanks will eventually make poly and plug the filter. I would also recommend installing a MB aux water pump with the HIH system and a FASS or Raptor pump. I will be using two 35 gal. steel tanks for unheated VO on my '69 Chevy PU/ Perkins diesel.
As the weather warms up, I increase the % of WVO in my 81 VW. Come late spring to early fall, there is 100% WVO in the stock tank.
I have never used RUG, but I know of people that have done it.
As it gets colder, I increase the diesel %.
Currently, I am running straight diesel (I am in the North East.)
I have been doing this for 5 years without any trouble. The only thing I did, was to wrap the stock fuel filter with copper tubing to capture some of the engine water heat, and I also installed a clear pre-filter (like in a Mercedes Benz) before the main filter. I buy them in bulk, so they are inexpensive and I change these small filters out several times a year.
Just understand that WVO has a high detergent value and when you start to blend, you will go through filters quickly until the tank has been cleaned. This is why I installed the small pre-filter before the stock fuel filter. I can see the sediment and garbage in the clear filter and swap it out quickly. I also keep spare filters in the VW just in case.
Also note: The older vehicles are easier to fudge around with as it relates to WVO. I would not blend in my 2003 7.3, but I know of some who have.
Good luck

I know of a two Greases who run TWO TANK systems - one for diesel and the second tank for a mix of RUG and WVO. The rations are vary due to the climate where they. On average the ratio is between 10% and 15% by volume. The process was simplified to the same ration but by gals of RUG and gals of WVO. Running SVO and RUG works for some, but not for others. Your call. Hope this helps.
