Conor, or anyone else experienced with Rabbits:

For future reference can you please tell me what you guys at Greasecar set the timing at on a Rabbit? (mine's an '84)

The Bentley Manual Says this for Rabbits '83/'84 Standard Diesel:

checking......0.90-1.00mm
adjusting......0.95mm plus or minus 0.02mm

For WVO use what do you guys set the timing at?

I'd appreciate it if you could share it.

I'm reading that thread, thanks Omar. However, it makes me feel like an idiot. I really wish I understood what they were talking about. I just replaced my injectors and it does run better on VO. But something still isn't right. It's like after I run VO for 15 or 20 mins. on the interstate (where it runs great), I pull off to do "stop and go" driving and getting into first gear seems almost impossible. The rabbit shakes and then surges at idle.

I do understand, I think, what you meant about advancing the timing 1 degree, which is .10mm right? Like from .90 to 1.00mm is one degree? Or not. I can't even call myself a half a**ed mechanic I just want to do the right thing. I'll try to make more sense of your readings and study my Bentley manual, so I can get this taken care of.

Although I didn't mention that I'm in the process of cleaning my oil better...that might make a difference. I've been clogging up my 5 and 1 micron filters because I didn't filter the bigger stuff out first. Also settling in large barrels.

are you using a lift pump at the tank?

No lift pump at the tank. I do have one of those micro diesel pumps in my spare parts bin. Weren't you the one who told me that the heated tanks blow those lift pumps? I use a heated tank. Unless you're talking about those 200 dollar raptor pumps, which i cannot afford.

yes a heated wvo tank will kill a cheap lift pump after a while. Have you checked for air in your system? sounds like air maybe getting into your system from the wvo filter ? fitting? just a thought O

I have obsessively checked for air leaks. I can check again though, as they can be one of those things that creep up on you again and again with grease cars. How many miles does your rabbit have? it's a '79 right?

daren,

sorry i must have missed this one before. I generally set toward the advanced end of the limits, but the limits depend on your year and pump. TD pumps are generally about 1.05mm, but NA pumps range from 1.00 to 0.95mm.
