Thermosiphon

I aquired a small stainless steel 110V 750W hot tub heater that is little more that a 1.5 inch by 12 inch long stainless pipe with a heating element inside. If I weld a fitting near the bottom and top of my filtered veg oil drum and install this unit in the middle, will it create a thermosiphon to heat the veg oil in the entire drum or just sit there and get hot?

A thermosiphon needs to have the hot input to the tank below the surface of the liquid in order to create the siphon affect. Otherwise air gets into the loop and circulation stops until the liquid boils and "purculates" out. Hope this helps .. Kg

I didn't describe my idea very well. The fittings would be welded outside the tank 1/3 of the way from the bottom and 1/3 of the way from the top and have elbows one facing down and one facing up. The heater would be attached in the middle. The welded on fittings would be below the level of the oil. I was wondering if the heat from the heater would cause the oil to rise in the tube and pull cold oil up from the bottom or if it would just sit there and overheat??

water heaters heat the whole tank with one element (in 60 gallon tanks anyway) and do it quickly, I put such an element just above the bottom of a 55g drum and it got good and hot in 15 min.

Rabitman ... Yes that would work as long as the top fitting was below the top level of the VO. However, I think using the setup Chris mentioned would be better. Kg

You're all right! A water heater element in the drum would be easier and work better. I'm a terminal packrat and had this little hot tub heater in my hand and just had to use it somehow. Maybe I'll build a hot tub.............then I can fill it with grease!
