Winter WVO Heating tip

I was having trouble with the cooler weather getting my VO temp up to 170deg like summer time. I installed a radio shack indoor/outdoor digital temp gauge. Putting the sensor under the hood to monitor underhood temps. WIth outside temps of 50 deg the Underhood temp would be 70deg. The thermo cooling in the motor compartment is cooling the hoses, valves and everthing else related to VO temp. I bought a grill cover from Cabelas for $40 did a test today at 50deg outside temp got my underhood temp to 95 deg and guess what 170deg VO temp on the freeway vs 140deg. So at least for my burb getting the underhood temp up to 100 got the job done, Not sure if the smaller cars have the same thermo cooling effect. but for you 6.5 greasers something to think about. Go Do something simple,Keep heating.

blocking the grill at rather mild temps, I guess as long as your not overheating,,,

Also when you run your heater its sucking the btus out of the coolant so know I can also run my heater and not effect the heating of the VO. Its all trail by fire.

Thanks! On the list of things to do. What a difference 30 degrees ambient temp makes on my setup. Need to make some changes soon. Can you open the cover up slightly for the not so cold days and is it a cover made for the 6.5 grill?

Yes you got it it also comes with a bug screen for summer snaps on the same snaps.So far I am running with just 1 flap open and as you say on warmer days I can always open up the 2nd one. I also have a rear heater so I can control engine cooling with both front and rear heaters during the winter. The engine gets to temp as if I am towing my bass boat. So its just right for my vehicle and keeping the VO at summer heating temps of 170degs.

I've been playing with blocking the radiator with a $1.99 floor mat from Odd Lots. I cut it in 3 pieces and slid them in to cover 95% of the radiator. It works well but you have to be careful, when climbing hills it could overheat. I pulled one of the 3 pieces so only about 75% of the radiator is blocked and it has not overheated yet at 50 F ambient.

YOu can always turn your heater on that would help with those temp fluxuations in the hills. Everycar will act differently so as with VO experiment with your vehicle.

The biggest reason I'm looking to try this is that my drive to work is nice and easy for the burb, no big hills, top speed of 45 for short distance, mostly 30-35, and only 22 minutes one way. So when it comes time to work it on my days off from work, I'll have to remember to open here up. After doing this conversion I find myself watching the gauges more often. Think I'll wait until I go to see my mom on Thanksgiving and see if she wants to whip something up with here industrial sewing machine.

You would be suprised that your burb with the outside temp range, you can run with if fully closed off. I have run from 40deg to 60deg on the freeway with it fully closed off and the cooling system works just great without overheating the engine and the VO is 170deg, I would suspect any warmer and I would have to start to open it up as the underhood temps start to climb and you all know how the PMD loves those hot temps.
