Cooking oil powers local man's commute

By CATHY DYSON

French fries and hush puppies keep Erik Whittington going on his daily commute from Locust Grove to Stafford County.

The 38-year-old doesn't eat them by the pound. He uses the oil they're cooked in to fuel his 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, which has a diesel engine.

He gets used cooking oil from Virginia Barbeque in Spotsylvania County, then filters it several times to remove goo left behind after deep-frying.

Then, he pumps the amber-colored liquid into his tank, turns the key and gets 45 to 48 miles per gallon.

Slick technology

Dick Murphy's Chevrolet Suburban has a very distinctive new-car smell.

The scent, however, is not that of fresh vinyl and rubber, but something more akin to fried chicken.

How to Go Grease

  • Getting started: To do the initial conversion you will need a diesel vehicle, a Greasecar kit and either some mechanical skill or the number of a qualified mechanic.

  • Finding fuel: The Greasecar requires a small amount of diesel fuel, available at most gas stations, and straight vegetable oil to run. Most drivers will have to find area restaurants willing to sell or give away their used oil and do regular collections at these locations.

The other oil fuels slick savings

It's a $2-per-gallon bargain for drivers

By Bill Wolfe ? bwolfe@courier-journal.com ? June 22, 2008

When Larry Greenwell fills up his diesel-engine Volkswagen Beetle, he can laugh all the way to the tank.

While diesel fuel averaged about $4.65 per gallon late last week in Kentucky, Greenwell's 2006 VW runs on used cooking oil that he buys for about $2 a gallon.

One 13.5-gallon tank takes him nearly 600 miles -- an average of about 44 miles per gallon, slightly less than he might get with standard diesel. But, he said, "at that kind of mileage and that kind of car, who cares?"

Greenwell's car is one of nine vehicles converted to burn vegetable oil for Legacy Development Corp., where he is purchasing manager. "It's saving us a bunch of money," he said

GOING GREEN WITH SUN, GREASE AND TURBINES

MILTON —

At age 13, Mark Doyle can expertly explain a "grease car" – a vehicle that uses discarded, filtered vegetable oil as fuel instead of gasoline.

In the family garage, the boy opened the trunk of a red 2002 Volkswagen Jetta and pointed to a special "grease tank" in the space typically reserved for a spare tire. It was filled with used cooking oil collected from restaurants.

"It's a spare tank that connects with the engine," the teen said. "You can't start a car with pure vegetable oil."

Anyone can buy a "grease kit tank" to use with a diesel-run cars, and his stepdad, David DeSantis, commutes regularly in one. His mom, Kathy Doyle DeSantis, drives a diesel-fueled Mercedes. And those cars are fine – for now. The couple plans to buy electric cars when the Chevrolet Volt arrives on the market in 2009 or in 2010.

Would You Use Veggie Oil to Fuel Your Vehicle?

This may sound strange, but you can run your diesel car or truck on vegetable oil and nearly eliminate your use of traditional gas or diesel. For certain people, veggie oil could lead to major savings. Called veggie cars or grease cars, these vehicles have fuel systems modified to burn both diesel fuel and straight vegetable oil. The idea is actually a modern twist on the original intention for the diesel engine.

But even proponents say veggie oil is not for everyone because of the extra work it requires. Nevertheless, there is a small, but growing, part of the population that's passionate about using grease to make their cars go. These people are drawn to this alternative fuel because it saves them money, gives them more control of their transportation fuel needs and makes a difference for the environment.

Vegetable Oil as Fuel for a Car

Can a car or truck use vegetable oil as fuel? Yes, with some modifications a diesel car or truck can use old filtered food grade vegetable oil (the kitchen oil that restaurants throw out everyday) as fuel. I have a 2004 Passat TDI, and I bought a kit from GreaseCar (see www.greasecar.com) that allows me to use vegetable oil or diesel as fuel in my car.

Where did I get this idea? My co-worker had a Greasecar, and he told me about the financial benefits that he was getting with his converted 1996 Passat TDI. The cost of gasoline is around $2.50 - $3.00 per gallon. Waste vegetable oil (WVO) can be acquired for free, and it can be bought already filtered (I pay $1.25 per gallon).

Greasecars: Not Just for Crunchy Granola Types

Check out Robert's '88 Wrangler: it's running a 2.1L Renault diesel and it gets 30 mpg on waste vegetable oil. That's right, and that none of that seems to stop it from being totally burly and badass, as pictured. With the price of gas pushing three bucks a gallon in many places, the idea of converting one's ride to run on free fuel for life becomes increasingly appealing. Fortunately, Greasecar.com sells a relatively simple conversion kit that includes an extra fuel tank, filtration system, and plumbing, that can allow virtually any diesel-powered vehicle to run on the old fry grease that restaurants will happily give you for free. You keep your ride's existing fuel system intact to run diesel during warm-up, because the viscous vegetable oil needs to be heated to the point where it's runny enough to burn. So you'd probably have to fill up with a tank of diesel—oh, every 6 months or so.

Cooking Oil Could Power Jersey Town's Plows

But Justin Carven, president of Greasecar Vegetable Fuel Systems in East Hampton, Mass., which manufactures converters that allow diesel-powered vehicles to run on vegetable oil, disagreed.

"If you properly clean and filter the oil, you can get a lot of use out of the engine," said Carven, who has worked on a pilot program for commercial vehicles and for a number of tractor-trailers. "We've converted a number of larger tractor-trailers and when they use clean fuel, they've been highly successful, exceeding 200,000 miles since conversion [to vegetable oil]."

Greasecar has seen demand increase since it was launched seven years ago. Last year, the company sold 1,500 conversion kids. "With fuel prices peaking last year, it definitely encouraged a lot of interest," said Carven.

"I was spending about $90 to $100 a week on gas," said Lefebvre.

That all changed two weeks ago after Lefebvre installed a Greasecar Vegetable Oil Conversion System in his Volkswagen Beetle. The system allows diesel vehicles to run on straight, filtered vegetable oil.

"You start the engine on diesel and you stop the engine on diesel, but once the vegetable oil is hot enough, you can run the car on vegetable oil. The engine coolant is diverted around the oil filter for the vegetable oil and that will heat up the oil inside with the extra heat from your engine. Once I flip the switch, the diesel needle never moves," said Lefebvre.

VEGGIE OIL SYSTEMS FOR TCs

Today we're starting a two-part article on our new vegetable fuel system. In this first part, we will discuss the components of a vegetable fuel system and how one runs a diesel truck on vegetable oil. In the second part, we'll get into the types of fuels we're able to burn in our truck and the environmental questions involved.

Installing a Vegetable Fuel System

It's actually very simple to have a vegetable fuel system installed in your truck. That is if you have a diesel truck for which a conversion kit is offered and you're willing to spend about $3,000 for the kit and installation. Answering the first question is easy, just go to www.greasecar.com and see if they have a kit for your truck. If you're mechanically inclined, you can even install the Greasecar kit yourself, which would be a considerable cost savings. If you're like us, you call a local Greasecar mechanic who installs the system for you. For our conversion, we hired Dave Dunham of Smarter Fuel .

"I began the R&D in 1998 and at that time I was only aware of one other person who was running a vehicle on vegetable oil," he said. "This really only began about 10 years ago."

Carven said he personally owns four SVO vehicles, including a 2001 Mercedes that he has driven 90,000 miles on vegetable oil. Skeptics of the system say that vegetable oil is tougher on engines.

"I've heard that my car smells like egg rolls," says Moran, "but that's a small price to pay."

Home brew for your car--Two valley men combat global warming with alternative fuels

It couldn't quite be called a trend yet, but at least two local residents are combating global warming, Islamic terrorism and air pollution by powering their cars on homemade alternative fuels.

Wood River High School biology teacher Larry Barnes mixes up biodiesel, which is an altered form of a vegetable oil and can be used in any vehicle that runs on diesel fuel. Josh Solly, the co-owner of a log home restoration business, uses straight vegetable oil, which only needs to be filtered before being poured into the tank, but has required some modification to his vehicle.

In both cases, the home entrepreneurs' raw material is used fryer oil from restaurants. It would otherwise be thrown away.

DIESEL ARTICLE IN LA TIMES.COM FEATURES GREASECAR WEBSITE
Clean, diesel in one breath--The words would seem to form an oxymoron, but a low sulfur gas is changing a dirty reputation.

A drive up the Long Beach Freeway, trapped between a dozen soot-belching big rigs from the port, is a good example of why diesel engines have such a lousy reputation in this country.

Motorists know diesel not only from the tremendous air quality problems caused by big trucks and ships that ply waters off the coast, but from the clanking engines of the 1970s-era Mercedes-Benz cars and the kerosene-like odors that announce their arrival. But a revolution is underway and a key development occurred just last week that will have a major effect on the future of diesel.

Grease is the Word--Tyler Staffer Fills Up With an Alternative to Alternative Fuel

It's been a regular topic of discussion around the Region 5 offices in Tyler—high fuel prices. With on-again, off-again soaring gas and diesel costs, some Tyler staffers have begun looking for alternative means of getting to work, including purchasing a more fuel-efficient car and car pooling. But for Timmy Burris the answer to high gas prices was not found in a new-car lot, but instead in his own kitchen.

How some motorists are greasing their way from dependence on foreign oil

Driving down the interstate, you might spot Trip Hornsmith's 2001 Volkswagen Golf TDI and assume that it runs on diesel fuel.

But idle in traffic, and the truth will be revealed by the tailpipe. Hornsmith's car also runs on fry grease – yes, the same stuff that restaurants use for deep frying.

The 30-year-old White Stone resident, who faces a daily drive of about 130 miles round trip to work, converted his car about a year ago. It can now run on vegetable oil or diesel fuel.

Deep Fried Rides Converts Diesel Engines to Biodiesel

Southerners love their deep fried food, from chicken to okra and everything between. And now, they can even deep fry their rides.

Andrew Couch started Deep Fried Rides a few years ago, a business that installs fuel systems allowing vehicles to run on vegetable oil. The systems can only be put in diesel engines because they're made of heavier-duty materials that can handle high temperatures and run on thicker fuels.

"The first diesel was actually run on peanut oil," Couch said. "The problem was that it kept on clogging everything up."

Yes, vegetable oil.

In the true spirit of an independent venture, neither man asked for the advice of financial gurus or research analysts, but acted only on his own intuition — that of a homegrown environmental engineer (Hanka, who's 44) and a Tazmanian Sea Ray salesman and handy-man (Inman, 45).

Bryan Gembusia loves his 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300 Turbo Diesel.

As Gembusia heads down Park Drive coming out of Boiling Springs, slightly above the speed limit, you can see that it's got a fair bit of power, even for a car with 155,000 miles on it. The five-cylinder, 3.0-liter engine still roars when you floor it, 20-plus years after it rolled off a German assembly line.

Just before pulling into his destination, the South Middleton Township municipal building, Gembusia reaches for a switch on an installed console between the driver's and passenger's seats and flicks it. A red light goes off.

"We're back on diesel," Gembusia says.

The trip odometer reads 103 miles; the fuel gauge is still pegged at full.

As fuel prices rise, drivers look for greener (and cheaper) alternatives

Joel Henderson isn't a hippie, a tree hugger, or even a fan of expensive organic foods.

But he does worry about rising gas prices, so earlier this year he spent $1,200 to convert his 2001 Ford F-250 diesel pickup to run largely on grease that's been discarded from restaurants.

The 35-year-old Whitman information technology worker must endure the sometimes messy and complicated process of collecting grease as well as the occasional whiff of fries in his truck.

But he says it's worth it because he now only needs enough diesel fuel to start up and shut down the engine.

''I drive about 50 miles a day and never spend more than $10 a week on fuel," said Henderson, who estimates he would otherwise be spending about $80 a week.
